On-site sodium hypochlorite generators (OSG) provide a continuous source of chlorine while eliminating many safe-handling issues generally associated with chlorine gas systems. The On-site sodium hypochlorite generators produces a 0.8% strength chlorine solution. Compared to high strength solutions, low strength sodium hypochlorite is less affected by temperature changes and helps to suppress unwanted bi-product formation.On-site generation is a proven, cost-effective, reliable and safe alternative treatment to chlorine gas and bulk sodium hypochlorite disinfection.
The chlorinator cell consists of parallel titanium plates coated with ruthenium and sometimes iridium. Older models make use of perforated (or mesh) plates, rather than solid plates. Electrolysis naturally attracts calcium and other minerals to the plates. Thus, depending on water chemistry and magnitude of use, the cell will require cleaning in a mild acid solution (1 part HCl to 15 parts pool water) which will remove the buildup of calcium. Excessive build up can reduce the effectiveness of the cell. Running the chlorinator for long periods with not enough salt in the pool can strip the coating off the cell which then requires an expensive replacement, as can using too strong an acid wash.
This mixture is fed into an electrochemical reactor whereby electric current is applied to produce the disinfectant.
The hypochlorite production (8-9 gr. Cl2/ liter) is automatically controlled, depending on the required and needed quantity at the dosing point.
Since the electrochemical process also generates hydrogen (H2), the system is equipped with a degassing vessel and a controlled and monitoring air-flow in order to dilute hydrogen under its explosive limit (with a 4 time safety margin being 1 %).
ClorTec systems generate a 0.8% sodium hypochlorite disinfection solution, a chlorine equivalent, using only salt, water and electricity. ClorTec units range in capacity from up to 1 kg/day or 2 lb/day to 1,360+ kg/day or 3,000+ lb/day.
The electrode frames are made of high resistant injection moulded PVDF
Anodes are made of titanium (Ti) substrate with a noble metal oxide coating, the same as being used for commercial chlor-alkali production.
